He was born on July 6, 1907 in Coyoacán, South of the City of Mexico.
It was the third of the four daughters of Matilde Calderón and German Jew photographer Guillermo Kahlo.
In 1913, he suffered an attack of poliomyelitis which permanently affected the use of his right leg.
As a young man of 16 years, when conducting studies in the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria from this city he met Diego Rivera, who was painting his mural Creation in the school. She was fatally injured in a tram accident. In his recovery, is when Frida starts his painting. Three years later he presented Diego Rivera some of his early works and this encouraged her to continue painting. In August 21 of the year 1929, they got married. She was 21 years old and had 46.
The work of Rivera influenced his work, gave color to simple and spacious areas in intentionally naive manner. He wanted as her husband, that his painting was evidence of Mexican resorting frequently to themes of folklore and folk art in his country. Marriage Kahlo-Rivera were members of the Mexican Communist Party. The House painter lived during their married life with the famous painter, was donated by the nation and transformed into the Museum which bears the name of Frida Kahlo.
