Professor Dickson Despommier of Columbia University, proposes a solution to the problem of future food shortages, creating Vertical Farms

The proposal of Vertical Farms, created by Professor Dickson D. Despommier, Columbia University, seeks not only solve the problem of population density or future food shortages, but also brake global warming, raise living standards in the developing world, changing the way society obtains its food and discards the garbage.

The goal is to plant and raise animals in skyscrapers in city centers. In this green skyscraper, could grow agricultural products within a city for all its inhabitants themselves.

According to a calculation Despommier, a vertical farm, with a block and 30-storey base, could provide food for 10 million people. On a planet that, according to the United Nations, will have 80% of its population living in cities by 2050, and that will need 1 billion hectares of additional land to accommodate the growing food to serve a population of 9.15 billion people, this seems a viable alternative.
