Liberalism is a doctrine that is based on the defence of individual initiatives and seeks to limit the intervention of the State in the economic, social and cultural life.
It is a philosophical system and policy which promotes civil liberties and opposed to despotism. Representative democracy and Republican principles are based on the Liberal doctrines.
Despite the usual consider liberalism as a very uniform, it is possible to distinguish several types of liberalism. Economic liberalism is the more diffuse, because it is forbidden by major corporations and the most important economic groups. It aims to limit State interference in trade relations, while promulgating the reduction of taxes and eliminating regulations.
According to economic liberalism, the fact that the State did not intervene is a guarantee of equal conditions and gives rise to a competitive market perfect. However, without the intervention of the State, social assistance is terminated (allocations are cancelled, for example).
Social liberalism, on the other hand, protects the freedom in lines private individuals and their social relations. The legalization of drug use is endorsed by social liberalism.
Finally, political liberalism entrust power to citizens, which elect their representatives freely and in a sovereign manner. In other words, the State officials are elected by the popular power of democracy.
Of course, each of these doctrines of liberalism have variations and defenders more or less strenuous also freedoms.
