Cecil Blount Demille was born in Ashfield on 12 August 1881. Among the founding fathers of film art, Cecil De Mille attends the environment of show business at an early age thanks to his father Henry and thanks to the latter's activities, teacher at Columbia University and preacher of sermons, which he enjoys with his wife Mathilda at writing plays. De Mille, begins in 1900 to write little things for theater in addition to acting with his brother major William. Attracted by the cinema, he founded his own film production company, "De Mille Play Company". The screening of the film "the great train robbery" and remains enthusiastic: founded in 1913 along with Samuel Goldwyn and Jesse l. Lasky Feature Play Company the "Jesse" Laski, who years later will be known as Paramount. On August 16, 1902 marries Constance Adams with whom he had a daughter named Cecilia. The couple will then three other children: Katherine, John and Richard.
Starting from 20 his name becomes known as Biblical movie Director, to name one above all: "the ten commandments" (The Ten Commandments, 1923), it treats with crudeness and impetuosity burning biblical themes, showing great familiarity with the crowd scenes. The film will make an equally successful blockbuster remake in 1956 (with Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner). De Mille was able to launch many actors who become movie stars over time, including the great Gloria Swanson (alongside whom will read the part of himself in "Sunset Boulevard"), and will make itself heard for his outlandish attitudes (such as squabbles with the Extras during the crowd scenes) as well as his staunch religious beliefs and conservative. Its spectacular melodrama "the greatest show on Earth" (The Greatest Show on Earth), won an Oscar in 1952 for best film; the same work also earned him a nomination for Best Director. Who died in Los Angeles on January 21, 1959, Demille is buried in the cemetery of "Hollywood Forever Memorial Park", in Hollywood, California. Annually, in the context of the film awards "Golden Globe", it is given an award named after his name.
