Definition of illiteracy

Illiteracy means the disability that has a human being to perform basic read and write operations. Illiteracy appears as a result of lack of education and the percentage of the world population still mired in such conditions is infinitely less than other eras of history, there are still numerous societies and communities that have much of illiterates in its population. Illiteracy is one of the main problems and debts of mankind since those persons considered illiterate are not by own choice if not by the existence of high levels of poverty, poverty and lack of educational opportunities in the medium in which you insert. This is so the rates of illiteracy are made clearly visible in countries developing or third world, countries in which education systems are poor or are not directly a priority.
In this sense, the African continent, as well as some countries in Asia and Central America are regions of the planet with highest percentages in the world. They are followed by some countries of Latin America and Asia, while in industrialized countries or first world such as Europe, North America and Australia, such percentages are insignificant.
UNESCO (United Nations education, science and culture organization) is the body responsible for carrying out important campaigns and alfabetizadores processes in different regions of the world, respecting cultural differences in each country or community. One of its main objectives is to encourage elementary education to consider the basis for the acquisition of the first knowledge and to ensure that each individual can develop fully throughout his life. The tasks of this body are basically the contribution of funds for construction of schools, introduction of new technologies, creation of a supportive environment for the education and maintenance of the basic structural conditions for schooling in all its forms.
