He was born in Pieve di Cadore, North of Venice, in the year 1477, though some scholars date its birth in 1487, 1488 and 1490.
School-fellow of Giorgione in the workshop of the Bellini in Venice. Among his early works are the Allendale Nativity (National Gallery, city of Washington and the country concert (towards 1510, Louvre Museum, Paris).)
