Definition of philanthropy

Philanthropy means, in general, love of mankind and everything humanity regarding, particularly in a constructive way expressed in the selfless help others. Etymologically, the word derives from the Greek φίλος (philos or edges) and άνθρωπος (anthropos), which respectively translate as "love" (or "lover of", "friend of") and "man", by what philanthropy means "love of humanity". Its antonym is Misanthropy.
Donations to humanitarian organizations, individuals, communities, or working to help others, directly or through non-governmental non-profit organizations, as well as it is volunteer work to support institutions that have the specific purpose of helping living beings and improve their lives, are considered philanthropic acts, provided they are not motivated by interests.
The term was coined by Flavius Claudius Julianus (331/332 – 26 June 363), who was Emperor of the Roman Empire from 361 until his death.
