Definition of selection

The selection term is used to refer to the Act of choosing, select one thing, object or individual among a set of elements or similar individuals. The selection can occur in different areas of life and typically the term is used in the cientifico-biologicos fields to refer to the process of natural selection that assumes that some species are naturally selected to survive in the specific medium in which arise.
The notion of selection may always imply a decision more or less fair since the process of selection of a person, a body or an object may be based on objective or subjective criteria depending on each case. If we talk about selection as the biological phenomenon mentioned above, we then take into account a myriad of elements that occur naturally and that have to do with the need for the nature of selecting the fittest organisms to survive in certain media. At the same time, the selection process will always involve some of the possible candidates to be selected will not pass the required criteria and will therefore be out of chances.
However, when we refer to any selection process carried out by human beings (such as the selection of professionals or employees for a position, the selection of staff between politicians, the selection of students to an educational institution), there may be both objective criteria as subjective. In the case of these last, are usually present since humans always made decisions of subjective way to weigh certain more or less general requirements in the selection process. It can be well argued that, unlike natural selection processes, those who man perform will be to a greater or lesser extent artificial selection processes.

Concept of selection

The concept of selection has its origin in the Latin word selectĭo. It's the action and effect of electing one or more persons or things among others. What is selected, separated from the rest by preference of who chooses.
For example: "I had several options available for my wardrobe for tonight, but my selection was a black trousers and a white shirt", "selection of the best songs of jazz of the Decade included numerous compositions of American artists".
The notion is associated with the team that is formed with the choice of players or athletes from different clubs to compete in a meeting or participate in a tournament. It is usual that the selection has a national character (includes players from the same country) and the resulting combined to participate in international competitions (facing national teams of other countries): "1970 Brazilian selection is among the best teams in history," "There will never be another argentina team as one that was champion in the World Cup in 1986", "the selection of Italy became champion in Germany 2006 by defeating the French team in the final".
Natural selection is called to the evolutionary mechanism characterized by differential reproduction of genotypes of a biological population. The environment promotes or hinders the reproduction of living organisms, which gives rise to this selection. Natural selection, therefore, constitutes the main of the origin of species and the adaptation to the environment.
Adverse selection, finally, is a concept in economics which holds that, when there is an asymmetry of information between buyers and sellers, the less suitable products can be selected.

What is selection

Selection, is a term, in its etymology from the latin "selectio" which designates the result of discern or choose between two or more material things (selection of the most valuable jewels) or intangible (selection of ideas) or living beings (selection of the best breed dogs), preferring to taking one or several of them, and discarding others. It is used in various fields:
In the world of work, for the selection of staff, at the time of choosing employees who play in the company, management by general the Department of human resources, taking into account inter alia, the good presence, the curriculum, and in certain cases, the assessment to which the applicant has been subjected.
In biology, the English naturalist, Charles Darwin (1809-1882) stated the principle of natural selection, as part of his theory on the evolution of the species, in order to explain it. He argued that the species, the playing, its hereditary characters they are changing to adapt to the environment, but some do so with greater opportunities than others, and these will be the species that will survive. So explained how, by the combined action of time and environment, they disappeared to certain species, and they were replaced by others, among them man.
In football, the word selection, is used to refer to the team that has been chosen by coach to represent the country in regional, for example "Copa América", or World Championships.
In economics, referred to as adverse to the process selection for which, by reason of possessing "asymmetric information" (one of the parties have further data or information to the other) errors occur in the market; and certain products more expensive or riskier, are imposed in the preferences of the people, or are detrimental to business, getting clients who harms them, for example, in the latter case of insurance companies that manage to sell their policies for those most at risk with.
