They say that, on one occasion, Saint Francis of Assisi had invited a young Friar to accompany him to the city, to preach. They were underway and were for a long time walking the streets of the city, greeting people who were fondly. Occasionally, they stopped to caress a child, comforting an elderly, help a woman returning from the market loaded with bags.
After a couple of hours, Francis said the partner that it was time to return to the convent.
- But not come to preach? -asked the monk with strangeness.
Francisco replied with a very sweet smile:
-We have been doing since we left. Did you not see how people watched our joy and felt consoled with our greetings and smiles?
It is only possible to educate values if one struggles and strives to build them in your own life. Often we talk about values, we propose values, we show values, we reflect values but we don't teach them because we do not live them, because we are not committed to embody them in our Act everyday.
Parents and teachers should consider, with humility and responsibility, go still life models for their children and students, so that they perceive them as people committed to its continuous improvement. You can only teach values that strives to teach them to itself, which is struggling to get out of their weaknesses and is committed every day to be better.
In a culture and a world where children and youth are bombarded with proposals of hollow models, narcissistic and openings, where the fullness is degraded to mere eating and appear, we need to deeply transform the current schools, if we want to really have an impact on the training of students. Of mere places of teaching and instruction, or deposits of children and youth while their parents are at work, schools must be conceived as spaces for practice, to live and to develop the values that are considered essential for the individual and the community. Therefore, must be understood and assumed as communities of life, democratic participation, dialogue, work and shared learning. Educational communities that break absurd artificial barriers between school, family and society, in which you learn because you live, because participates, cooperatively built alternatives to individual and social problems, promotes the initiative, discrepancies are tolerated, is promoted and practiced every day, and in all instances and at times the solidarity and service.
Educating values implies that every teacher and teacher understands and assumes that it is not only teaching a certain area or material, but it basically is master of humanism, that their role goes far beyond transmitting knowledge or to prepare students to successfully pass a series of tests and examinations. Educate, once again, is train people, chiseling hearts, open horizons and paths of life and stimulate with the example and the word walking them.
Not never forget but one which explains knows or believes to know, one teaches what is.
