What is dance?

The dance is the movement in space that is one part of the body of the performer if not with the body with certain beat or rhythm as an expression of feelings, culture and society. We also call it dancing, although not everyone understands it as the same. For human dance is a form of art known in all cultures. We cannot nor think that dance is unique to human beings, we know that monkeys do not and that many expressions of birds could not receive another name that dance.

For us, human beings, believed that dance was associated with magic or religious rituals. It was apparently used as a way of reinforcing the belonging to the group that they belonged to, to invoke the forces of nature and as a way of expressing feelings. The dance may also have been a way to tell stories and even a form of entertainment. This union of the magia-religion - relax stays for a long time and the Greeks are the first to make dances decoupling of those purposes and use them for others, as in the policy for making satires. During the middle ages the Church forbids them in cults but tolerates them. In the 19th and 20th centuries the dance is scaled and is considered as a form of entertainment.

In a dance we find six formal elements:

The rhythm that is the frequency with which repeated movements, although in other arts rhythm manifests both as recurring colors and shapes. We would say that it is what makes it different from a "cumbia," "Waltz". The body expression in the dance is what we call the body language and is perhaps the oldest communication we have. This allows a same dance may seem totally different interpreted by different people or different intentions. The movement which is offset in the space of the body and its parts. In many cases is very regulated the movement as the "ballet" or is very free as in the so-called "modern dance".

Then we have to space or scenario that is the environment where the dance is done. It is essential for an appropriate setting conveys a completely different to different dance force. The color that is difficult to define, but the set of sensations that make a rather particular dance is. For example the color is what makes it different from a "tango" played by an expert that the interpreted by someone who is hardly a connoisseur.

They also involved a number of factors such as the choreography that is the art of combining all these elements to obtain a harmonious dance and that it meets some purpose. Also mimicry, singing and other performing arts forms used dance or are imbued within it.
