Concept and What is: Tacit knowledge

The word "tacit" originates from the Latin Tacitus = not expressed in words. It is the way of knowledge inherent in each particular person, not easy transmission through speech or writing, but its existence is easily seen in everyday practice. Tacit knowledge can be understood as that which a person is able to perform effectively, and that is acquired from the experiences of that person's life.

Being linked directly to people, tacit knowledge is difficult to spread and great value for modern enterprises, which has the human capital represented by the creativity of employees, their greatest asset.

Such knowledge is studied, within companies, by professionals in the field of Humanities, as Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology and Business Management. The purpose is to try to transform the tacit and explicit knowledge, public, so that everyone has access to it. But the main issue, as has been said, is the difficulty of expression of this knowledge into text or speech.

The best way to convey tacit knowledge is through direct interaction with other individuals, groups, performing work or projects that require the knowledge that we can not explain, such as cycling, which is a simple activity, however, teaching difficult because skill is a personal characteristic.

It is a form of subjective knowledge, not measurable, difficult to capture and transmission and, therefore, very valuable.

A tacit knowledge example occurs when someone very experienced in kitchen, happens in a recipe. We note all the ingredients, the preparation sequence, time and everything that is necessary for the preparation of the recipe, however, in the end, seems to lack something, a special touch and this touch is exactly the tacit knowledge that the cook has and that does not always go to other people.

This difficulty in transmitting tacit knowledge is inherent in all, because when we explain something, usually we are sure we are being clear, however, as each person has their own experiences and therefore their own tacit knowledge often this transmission does not occur the satisfaction.

What is inside us, belongs to us and we know it because it is ours. Pass it on to others is not always an easy task and often is not impossible if we take into account the experiences, beliefs and desires will of others.
