Adventure, in turn, is a strange event, an event or a company risky whose outcome is uncertain. The term comes from the word latin adventūra.
These two concepts allow us to address the notion of adventure tourism. It is the tourist activity which involves a trip in a remote area or that includes a plan where unforeseen events can occur. We can say that adventure tourism is a type of tourism such as cultural tourism or ecotourism.
The best way to understand the adventure tourism is to compare it with conventional tourism, which is exactly the opposite. If the majority of travellers tend to visit cities or lounging on the beach, adventure tourists are opting for a more active holiday, including extreme sports or exploring the nature.
The combination of trekking or hiking with camping (accommodation in a tent) is a form of adventure tourism. Other options include activities such as rafting, surfing, horseback riding or mountaineering.
It is important to note that adventure tourism has designed recreation in contrast to adventure sport that tends to competition and which requires more demanding training and preparation.
