Latin intellectus, the intellect is the rational cognitive power of humans. It is understanding and the ability to think of the man. Examples: "novelist demonstrated his great intellect through his clear analysis of the situation of the country", "the president is very sympathetic, but it is not really known for his intellect", "the club will build on his intellect and not magic solutions".
Intellect implies the capacity to develop mental representations of reality and to connect with each other. The concept can be associated with intelligence, thought, and the reasoning.
The ability to understand unity of resemblance and from the individual to the universal (and), create and connect concepts and to understand the various problems is part of the intellect.
For psychology, the intellect is related to the conduct and behaviour. Neurology, however, combines intellect to the structure of the brain and nervous system (i.e., the hardware support of the behavior / conduct). Sociology is also a science that comes close to the concept of the intellect, based the study of relations between humans.
What pertains or belongs to the intellect is known under the designation of intellectual ("solve this riddle is an intellectual challenge difficult to overcome"). This term (which is both a noun and an adjective) is also used to refer to anyone who is interested in science and literature and who devotes much of his time to study the reality and reflect on social issues ("Portuguese writer is considered an intellectual involved in the situation of women").
