Biography of Pino Arlacchi

Tough fight without fear

February 21, 1951 born on February 21, 1951 in Gioia Tauro (RC), currently resides in Vienna. He was a member of the Italian Senate from 1995 to 1997 and a member of the Chamber of deputies from 1994 to 1995. During this period, he was elected vice President of the Parliamentary Commission on the Mafia, which had already provided its expertise, acting as Advisor, in the years from 1984 to 1986. As Senior Adviser to the Interior Ministry at the beginning of the 90, established the Anti-mafia Investigative Directorate (DIA), a detective agency created to fight organized crime. Already in 1989, however, had become President of the International Association for the study of organized crime. In 1992 he was appointed Honorary President of the Fondazione Giovanni Falcone in recognition of his commitment to fight the serious phenomenon represented by associations mafia criminals. Other than that, Pino Arlacchi was also a personal friend of Falcone and none better than he deserved that title. The Foundation has arisen following the murder of a Sicilian Prosecutor in 1992, has become a hero to the whole nation. Among the other non-minor who see committed must also include teaching Pino Arlacchi. His academic career began in 1982 as an associate professor at the University of Calabria, a position he holds until 1985. Later, became Professor of sociology at the University of Sassari in 1994, then Professor of applied sociology at the University of Florence. To remember instead that, in 1987, he was a visiting professor at the University of Colombia in New York. On September 1, 1997, was appointed Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna and Executive Director of the UN Office for drug control and crime prevention (ODCCP). His books and publications on organized crime have received international acclaim and have been translated into many languages. His studies on the phenomenon of the Mafia have earned worldwide recognition for the progress made in research and methodology, which also paved the way for the enactment of legislation of anti-Mafia, highly appreciated and useful in the difficult fight against organised crime. As stated above, currently lives and works in Vienna, Austria. He is married and has two children. From 2008 Pino Arlacchi is responsible for International Security Department of Italy of values. In the 2009 European elections occurred in the ranks of the same party and was elected.
