Biografia de George Brech

The artist George Brecht was born in Blomkest (Minnesota, USA) on March 7, 1924. After graduating in chemistry in 1950 began working as a researcher at the laboratories of some important pharmaceutical industries of New York and New Jersey until 1965, developing several important patents that are discreet commercial successes. Meanwhile he devoted himself as self-taught artistic painting following in the footsteps of "Action Painting", of which the artist Jackson Pollock's highest representative. Bracht is approaching then the thought and work of John Cage and attended his courses of experimental music held at the "New School for Social Researches". The personality of John Cage and the atmosphere of its courses the upset, letting him find a confirmation to his first artistic attempts.
Enters in contact with the other founders of "Fluxus", openly neo Dadaist Group (born in 1961). Brecht create "events" that will be one of the predominant features of "Fluxus". "Events" are defined by the same George Brecht as "short and elementary theatre pieces characterized by the same qualities alogiche details of happening." "Events" for Brecht "are not compartmentalized, but formally, if not expressively, equate to individual compartments of happening." His are not objects, are not really of the compositions, nemmene works of art per se, I am rather of the events. Entity made that live their own lives. In his "events" there are objects, space, time and opportunity to constant changes, with movements of objects properties.
The shape is sometimes the simple list of written instructions (the "event cards" in particular will be an expression of Brecht's experimentation with Word). In the period that coincides with the death of Jackson Pollock, Brecht develops a close friendship with Allan Kaprow and Robert Watts, with whom he wrote "to project in Multiple Dimension". In May 1963 Brecht, in collaboration with Roberta Watts is organizing a big event in the United States entitled "Yam Festival" and at the same time, publishes the journal "V". In 1964 proposes a new format for his work, the book "The Book of The Tumbler on Fire", a series of boxes containing his "events". The magazine "V 3" becomes the official organ of Fluxus that changes with each number the title while leaving upon the original letters.
The following year Brecht leaves the United States to move to Europe in Villefrance-sur-Mer (French Riviera). Here opens a small and particular store together with the poet Robert Filliou. The store is called "The Cedilla que Sourit" and wants to be a small cultural centre where we sell artworks, toys, trinkets, books. Due to lack of funds the shop in 1968: Brecht moves first in England, then in 1972 in Germany in Dusseldorf, finally in Cologne. In 1957 Brecht writes an essay entitled "Chance Imagery" describing various random methods and all possibilities to artistic creativity.
Brecht CITES Marcel Duchamp which most important figure in the field of experimentation of aleatory techniques, reporting as an example three plays: the "Music" of 1913 Erratum where pulls at random notes, "étalon" in which the artist uses 3 stoppage as expressive instrument the force of gravity and the "large glass" which is configured for three gauze squares exposed to an air flow and the launch with a small Matchbox toy cannon, dipped in paint to a precise point. In addition to the conception of "events", Brecht's contribution to "Fluxus" is due to his very personal process of simplification that led him to be counted among the exponents of minimalism. There are works in which Brecht manages to make further simplifications on events already minimized. Brecht applies a chemical and microscopic analysis-typical isolating situations already very simple. Between 1987 and 1990 realizes the "VOID", following work by at least twenty years the event series, in which the artist offers a direct link between the word and the natural element.
In contrast with the canonical system of letter writing as a character from print, engrave the word "VOID" (empty) on some fossils, considering it as the first involuntary and indelible trace left to posterity from a living being; This action loads the word "void" with new meanings, putting in light of a kind of non-presence, the memory of what was. He died in Cologne (Germany) on December 5, 2008.
