Biography of Gillo Dorfles

Factotum of beauty

April 12, 1910
A title would suffice to illustrate the notoriety of Dorfles in everything (and will be) contemporary in art history: his "latest trends in art today," a real bestseller in the industry. And it is not easy to sell books around a subject, contemporary art, with its absence of spectacular mass media and its "outdatedness" cultural enjoys little attention. The book of Dorfles, instead, invites us to explore the most significant currents, from casual to Postmodernism, in a pleasant and informative, with a functional and searchable so that from the first edition of 1961 to date has already registered a dozen reprints. In short, it is a small Bible for all those who want to know (and understand) themes and documents of the art of our time. But Gillo Dorfles, born in Trieste on April 12, 1910, is not only an art critic and Professor of aesthetics (he has taught at the universities of Milan, Florence, Cagliari, Trieste and was a visiting professor in several foreign institutions of prestige), but also money order artist firsthand.
It is also a painter, and was one of the founders in 1948, with Jean Monnet, soldiers and Munari, MAC (concrete art movement). These artists advocated a search of formal purity and aesthetic new internationalism. The movement, though he met with acclaim in Italy, was only a short flowering, historians and scholars say-stemmed from poor highgrading. Dorfles anyway, represented the theoretical cornerstone of this current, exposing on numerous occasions his aesthetic and introducing various written some exhibitions of companions.
As an artist, some of his paintings have been exhibited in two personal exhibitions at the library jump of Milan in 1949 and in 1950 and in numerous group exhibitions of concrete art movement, including the 1951 exhibition at Galleria Bompiani of Milan, the travelling exhibition in Chile and Argentina in 1952, and in the major exhibition "experiments of synthesis of the arts" that took place in 1955 in flower Gallery in Milan. In 1954 he was a member of an Italian section of group ESPACE with Munari, Monnini, Reggiani and Veronesi. Lecturer as mentioned in major universities in Europe and America, has recently received from the UAM, "Mexico City's Metropolitan Autonomous University" the title of doctor honoris causa, mention motivated by its excellent aesthetic and anthropological value studies in modern art, recently sent his ninety.
The art world has a lot to Gillo Dorfles which ultimately represents one of the most attentive, educated and sophisticated of the twentieth century, always focused on the developments of art and contemporary aesthetics. This is testified by the over thirty volumes data published over the past half century: the now fundamental "the becoming of the arts" to "fluctuations of taste", "Kitsch" to "new rites new myths", not to forget the beautiful "the range lost." In conclusion, it seems only right to emphasize, in the analysis of critical and analytical contributions developed in recent decades by Dorfles, the extraordinary industriousness and cultural curiosity that has always distinguished him, which resulted in investigations that don't leave out any field of social life, from advertising to industrial design, from fashion to photography: this without detracting from the constant insights into the art world, attentive to every new expression , sensitive to every original formal attitude.
