Lana Del Rey (whose real name is Elizabeth Woolridge Grant) was born on June 21, 1986 in New York. Raised in Lake Placid, he attended a boarding school in Connecticut and studied philosophy at Fordham University in New York. Teens are quite difficult for her, who suffers from a serious addiction to alcohol (which is then narrated in the album "Born to die"). After learning to play the guitar at the age of eighteen thanks to his uncle, however, Elizabeth began writing songs and performing in some clubs. Using the stage name of May 2006 between 2005 and the Jailer registers "Sirens", demo album released simultaneously with "Rock me" stable ", cd which is produced as Elizabeth Woolridge Grant. Elizabeth starts to load some of her songs on Youtube Channel which is discovered by the Stranger. After being signed, he made "Video Games", first single, which gets a remarkable success despite its pessimistic expectations. The song le allows obtaining a Q Award in October 2011 in category "Next big thing". Soon after the second album sees the light, made with Polydor and Interscope Records: it's called "Born to die", and is preceded by some performances at the "Chateau Marmont" in Los Angeles and at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City. After signing a contract with Next Model Management, participates on 14 January 2012 to "Saturday Night Live", getting a warm welcome from the audience but not enthusiastic reviews by critics.
On 31 January is published officially "Born to die", which appears on the upper floors of the charts around the world. This is, of course, the album (and year) of its explosion, as confirmed by the award of recognition as woman of the year of the GQ Men of the Year Awards, a Brit Award for international revelation, an Ivor Novello Award for best contemporary song (with "Video Games"), an Ifpi platinum Europe Award for album title "Born to die", and the UK Music Video Award for best international pop videos. In September 2012 released "Paradise" single that anticipates the release of the new album "Ride", whose music video was filmed in Las Vegas Metropolitan area.
In the autumn of that year, the Del Rey advertises for the 2013 a Europe tour that will visit Scotland, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, England, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Norway, the Ukraine, Luxembourg and Russia, for over thirty dates. The announcement elicits extraordinary reactions: tickets for a performance of Paris are sold in less than a minute and a half, so that the organisers are forced to add a new date. Day after day, increasing demands induce the staff of Del Rey to add new appointments, including three concerts in Italy in Milan, Rome and Turin. The November 8, 2012 is made the video of "Bel Air", a song that closes the album, in which the artist shows a change of look noticeable, abandoning the usual appearance of lounge performer.
Nominated at the Mtv Europe Music Award for best new artist, best push Act and best alternative artist, won the prize for the latter category: Frankfurt at the event also honors Taylor Swift for best female artist. Characterized by a musical style based on alternative rock, which she calls "Hollywood: Sadcore", Lana Del Rey (which before choosing the pseudonym had also tried to use other names, such as the previously mentioned Lizzy Grant and May Jailer, but also Sparkle Jump Rope Queen and Lana Rey Del Mar), rather melancholic melodies, has some sort of film music characterized by slow and sometimes gloomy lyrics. Influenced by the poetry of Walt Whitman (especially from his collection "Leaves of grass") and the film "American Beauty" and "the Godfather," has an emotional and attractive contralto voice, which some likened to that of Marilyn Monroe.
