What is the Meaning & Definition of refugee

The term refugee has two meanings. In a first meaning understood by refugee person who decides to protect themselves from any threat or danger and look for a safe place, i.e., a refuge. On the other hand, from the point of view of international law, there is the figure of the refugee, who is the person requesting protection outside their own nation.

Refugee status

An emigrant is any individual who decides to leave their country for reasons economic and in the hope of finding a better life in another country. However, the refugee is not properly an emigrant, since their reasons for leaving their country are very different.
International law provides for five specific reasons for considering someone as a refugee: 1) the abandonment of a territory for reasons of racial discrimination, 2) reasons of a religious nature, 3) due to the nationality (for example, when a minority group of a country is pursued on its own borders), 4) for being part of a social group and 5) for political reasons. These are the reasons which justify that an individual can apply for refugee status. Such a request must be based on a fear, i.e., the applicant must prove that your life is in danger for the stated reasons.
The problem affecting the refugees is complex. It should take into account that an immigrant could lie with respect to your personal situation in their country of origin with the intention of obtaining recognition of refugee. This possibility originates that the authorities that host countries have to study each of the requests, since otherwise there would be a 'call effect', is say, the mass migration of people into other countries claiming some sort of discrimination or persecution.
This circumstance involves a series of complicated procedures and special situations (for example, refugee camps where thousands of people are in a very precarious and uncertain situation waiting that a decision on their status).
The figure of the refugee can be understood from a single viewpoint and occurs when someone concrete and for very specific reasons is forced to ask for help and request their refugee status. However, in the context of war or of certain humanitarian crises often thousands of people decide to go to other places seeking protection. When this happens, the media speak of "crisis of the refugees" or other similar titles.
