He studied Agricultural sciences, then attended a seminar of theology in New York, which went to China in 1922 to an international conference that influenced a change of business address, turning to psychology. He studied the discipline at the University of Columbia, obtaining his title of Master in psychology in 1928, and PhD in 1931.
It objected to the practical therapeutic and diagnostic of his time techniques and founded what would become known as psychotherapy, customer-centric, understood as a synonym for patient. He began his work as a psychotherapist in an Institute in Rochester, New York where she worked for twelve years, with children and adolescents and with serious problems of social conduct. In the clinic he met Alfred Adler. Then he approached the work of Otto Rank and Sandor Ferenczi, defending a therapy active, short, intense, focused more in the present than in the past, and emotions rather than intellectual understanding. These authors published a book in 1924, "the development of psychoanalysis", which for many is the first text of psychotherapy.
In 1945 he was Professor of psychology and Executive Secretary of the Centre of Counseling from the University of Chicago, where systematically developed its basic theories, both the personality and the method of psychology.
