Manhattan Before Development
This illustration depicts the large island that Henry Hudson and the crew of the Half Moon saw when they reached the mouth of the river that would later bear Hudson's name. Robert Juet, a Half Moon crew member, called the island "Manna-hata." Manna-hata is thought to mean "place of many hills" in the indigenous Lenape language. The name stuck: Today, Manhattan is the most densely populated borough in New York City.
