“Happy is the people whose God is Jehovah!”—PS. 144:15.

• At what point did Jehovah begin to have a distinct people on earth?
• How were the Israelites to be a nation of witnesses?
How did Israel prove to be an unfaithful people, and what did Jehovah foretell?

(Romans 4:11) And he received a sign—namely, circumcision—as a seal of the righteousness by the faith he had while in his uncircumcised state, so that he might be the father of all those having faith while uncircumcised, in order for righteousness to be counted to them;
(Genesis 14:14) Thus A′bram heard that his relative had been taken captive. With that he mobilized his trained men, 318 servants born in his household, and went in pursuit up to Dan.
(Genesis 21:22) At that time A•bim′e•lech together with Phi′col the chief of his army said to Abraham: “God is with you in everything you are doing.
(Genesis 23:6) “Hear us, my lord. You are a chieftain of God among us. You may bury your dead in the choicest of our burial places. None of us will hold back his burial place from you to prevent you from burying your dead.”
(Genesis 17:1, 2) 17 When A′bram was 99 years old, Jehovah appeared to A′bram and said to him: “I am God Almighty. Walk before me and prove yourself faultless. I will establish my covenant between me and you, and I will multiply you very, very much.”
(Genesis 17:19) To this God said: “Your wife Sarah will definitely bear you a son, and you must name him Isaac. And I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant to his offspring after him.
(Genesis 17:10, 11) This is my covenant between me and you, that you and your offspring after you will keep: Every male among you must get circumcised. 11 You must circumcise the flesh of your foreskins, and it will serve as a sign of the covenant between me and you.
(Genesis 17:24-27) Abraham was 99 years old when he had the flesh of his foreskin circumcised. 25 And Ish′ma•el his son was 13 years old when he had the flesh of his foreskin circumcised. 26 On that very day, Abraham was circumcised and also his son Ish′ma•el. 27 All the men of his household, anyone born in the house and anyone purchased with money from a foreigner, were also circumcised with him.

(Genesis 35:10) God said to him: “Your name is Jacob. Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel will be your name.” And he began to call him Israel.
(Genesis 35:22-26) Once while Israel was dwelling in that land, Reu′ben went and lay down with Bil′hah his father’s concubine, and Israel heard about it. So there were 12 sons of Jacob. 23 The sons by Le′ah were Jacob’s firstborn Reu′ben, then Sim′e•on, Le′vi, Judah, Is′sa•char, and Zeb′u•lun. 24 The sons by Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. 25 And the sons by Bil′hah, Rachel’s servant, were Dan and Naph′ta•li. 26 And the sons by Zil′pah, Le′ah’s servant, were Gad and Ash′er. These are Jacob’s sons, who were born to him in Pad′dan-a′ram.
(Acts 7:8) “He also gave him a covenant of circumcision, and he became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the 12 family heads.
(Genesis 41:39-41) Phar′aoh then said to Joseph: “Since God has caused you to know all of this, there is no one as discreet and wise as you. 40 You will personally be over my house, and all my people will obey you implicitly. Only in my role as king will I be greater than you.” 41 And Phar′aoh added to Joseph: “See, I am putting you over all the land of Egypt.”
(Genesis 42:6) Joseph was the man in authority over the land, and he was the one who sold grain to all the people of the earth. So Joseph’s brothers came and bowed low to him with their faces to the ground.
(Genesis 48:4) And he said to me, ‘I am making you fruitful, and I will make you many, and I will transform you into a congregation of peoples, and I will give this land to your offspring after you as a lasting possession.’
(Acts 7:17) “Just as the time was approaching to fulfill the promise that God had announced to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
